Dog Run: How Big, Where, and What Goes on the Floor
Sizing, placement and flooring for a dedicated dog run - drainage, shade and dig-guard questions before you build. No dog-run-specific cost figure exists yet.

A dog run is a bounded structure inside your yard, not a fence around the whole property. Want your dog loose across the entire yard? You’re one page early.
This is one of fifteen jobs on the fence projects hub, an independent Tampa Bay guide that sells and installs nothing itself.
Where a Run Goes, and What Holds Up Under a Dog’s Feet
Placement decides more about a run than material ever will. Too close to a window and you’ve built a barking amplifier - I did that once in Riverview, six feet off the back door, and the dog barked at every squirrel within a week.
Walk the placement like a fence line: doors, windows, sightlines, which way the yard drains. I got that last part wrong once myself - a gravel floor picked for looking low-maintenance pooled against the foundation after the first hard storm, slope unchecked.
| Surface | Digging resistance | Drainage | Heat retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bare soil | Digs easily | Depends on the yard’s own grade | Not addressed in this research |
| Gravel | Not specifically rated | Drains well | Can hold heat underfoot |
| Poured pad | Resists digging | Needs its own drainage slope | Not specifically rated |
| Turf/synthetic | In between the other three | In between the other three | In between the other three |
Shade matters more here than in an open yard, since a confined dog can’t walk out from under it. No safe-exposure number is worth citing - a run with no shade plan is a common mistake, not a rare one.
Height and gate hardware follow the same size-and-temperament logic as a whole-yard fence, scaled down. Digger? The dig-guard method applies too.
Before you build: sizing and placement checklist
- Dog count and size - footprint.
- Doors, windows, sightlines - placement.
- Which way the yard drains - flooring.
- Hours of direct sun - shade plan.
- Known digger? The dig-guard method applies too.
What a Run Costs, and What Nobody’s Priced Yet
No dedicated run cost figure exists, and I’d rather say so than invent one. Material follows the same per-linear-foot bands as a whole-yard job, covered on the per-foot cost page, scaled way down. Floor, drainage and shade cost are a real gap, not invented.
Who’s Actually Allowed to Build One
Florida doesn’t license fence installation at the state level, a run included. Pinellas is the exception: a “Fence Erection Specialty Contractor” category since March 21, 1995, new-issuance an open question. Pasco and Hillsborough carry none - outside Pinellas, you’re the vetting authority.
Where Runs Go Wrong
The mistake I see most: a run sized to the fence budget, not the dog, too tight for real exercise. A floor with no drainage plan is close behind - standing water in a bounded space is worse than the same puddle in an open yard. Skip shade and you’ve built a heat trap. The edge can still be dug under, same failure as a whole yard. Call 811 at least two business days before any post hole; it’s free, fence work included.
Is a Dedicated Run Worth It
A run earns its keep when the goal is containing a dog in part of the yard, not all of it. Placement, flooring and shade matter more than the material you pick.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big should a dog run be? There’s no single right number - it depends on your dog’s size, how many share the space, and where it can go. Treat it as a placement question, not a square-footage figure.
What should the floor be made of? Bare soil digs easily; gravel drains well but holds heat; a poured pad resists digging but needs its own drainage slope; turf or synthetic sits in between. Pick based on digging habits and drainage.
Will my dog have enough shade in a run? Only if you plan for it - a run doesn’t come with shade built in. No safe-exposure figure is worth citing here, so treat a shade plan as a real design step.
Want the dog contained everywhere outside instead? When fencing the whole yard is the better fit is the page for that. On a sloped part of the yard, read that one first. Otherwise, the fence projects hub covers the rest.

This is an independent guide to fencing in the Tampa Bay area. It does not install fences, employ crews, hold a contractor’s license or publish customer reviews, and nothing above is a quote for your yard.
