Driveway Gate: Swing or Slide, and Why the Posts Cost More

Swing or slide is decided by site geometry, and gate posts carry loads line posts never see - the detail most quotes underprice. What to ask before you sign.

A driveway gate here means a manual vehicle gate: no motor, no keypad, no sensors. That layer belongs to the automated version of this job; this page covers what you build by hand.

One of fifteen jobs on the fence projects hub, an independent Tampa Bay guide that installs nothing itself. Florida doesn’t license this trade at the state level, though Pinellas keeps its own category where Pasco and Hillsborough don’t.

Swing or Slide - What Decides It

Site geometry decides this, not taste. Swing needs clear arc space on the property side to sweep without hitting a car, mailbox or slope. Slide needs a level track alongside the opening, at least as long as the leaf - harder to fit on a narrow lot than most expect.

Gate type Decided by Space needed Typical fit
Swing Clear arc space, property side Room to sweep without hitting a car, mailbox or slope Wider driveways
Slide A level, unobstructed track At least as long as the gate leaf Narrow driveways

Only need pedestrian access? The lighter, foot-traffic-only version of this job fits better. On a slope, swing clearance and track pitch both change - see what a slope adds to a driveway gate.

Why Gate Posts Cost More Than the Rest of the Fence

Line posts resist wind load spread evenly down a straight run. A gate post resists something different: the gate’s full weight, plus the twisting torque of swinging or sliding thousands of times over - concentrated tension, not distributed load. That’s why it’s the heaviest, deepest-footed post on the job, not padding.

One illustration, not a universal number: Wheatland Tube’s chain-link specs scale post diameter to leaf width and fabric height - a four-foot leaf takes a smaller post than one running ten to eighteen feet. Chain-link-specific, but bigger leaf, bigger post holds across materials.

Post type What it resists Typical size/footing
Line post Distributed lateral wind load Standard diameter and depth
Terminal/corner post Concentrated tension at direction changes Larger, deeper footing
Gate post Point load plus swing/slide torque Largest, deepest footing

Four years estimating taught me the gate-post line draws the most suspicion. One Land O’ Lakes customer wouldn’t sign until I broke down why two gate posts cost more than six line posts.

Hardware That Actually Holds Up

Vehicle-gate hinges, latches and locks carry a heavier duty rating than pedestrian hardware, since a car gate cycles under real load for years. Near the coast, alloy matters more: grade 316 stainless is the better-corroborated “marine grade” over 304, though one source pushes back - industry consensus, not a lab-tested standard. Bronze and brass resist corrosion naturally; galvanized costs least.

One red flag: mismatched metals, plain steel fasteners into an aluminum frame, invite galvanic corrosion where they touch.

The Cost Step From a Walk Gate to a Driveway Gate

A driveway gate adds roughly $600 to $1,000 versus a walk gate at roughly $300 to $550 each, per this site’s own cost research. Where you land depends on width, material and post upgrade. The per-foot cost breakdown, estimator included, sizes the gate-post upgrade.

Before You Sign

Setting posts? Call 811 at least two business days first - free, gate posts included. A manual gate suits lower traffic or a tighter budget; opening it several times daily, what changes when the gate is powered is worth reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are gate posts so much more expensive than the rest of the fence? A gate post resists concentrated tension and torque from a swinging or sliding leaf, not the distributed wind load a line post resists - the heaviest, deepest-footed post on the job. See the post-role table above.

What hardware actually holds up to daily vehicle use? Load-rated hinges, latches and locks built for daily vehicle weight, heavier-duty than pedestrian hardware. Near the coast, grade 316 stainless is the better-regarded marine option over 304.

When does it make more sense to automate instead of building this manually? Once daily traffic makes hand-opening old fast, or power’s already at the gate. A manual gate still suits lower traffic - what changes when the gate is powered covers the wiring layer this page skips.

Ask any quote to break the gate-post line out from the blended per-foot number - that shows whether an estimator actually priced your gate. The rest of the fence projects we cover live on the hub.
